It seems Arsenal have a clear run to sign Monaco hot shot Thomas Lemar. Lemar, who of course infamously turned down a move in the summer, had rumoured to attract the interest of Liverpool, who have a huge wad of Coutinho money in their wallet waiting to be spent.

However, as Salah continues to shred every defence he plays against to bits, Liverpool have taken the rather wise decision to build on other more pressing areas of the squad.

Some may argue Arsenal need to take a similar approach, surely a goalkeeper, centre back and a holding midfielder is far more important than yet another attacker. However, if you have watched Arsenal this season, really watched, you will know Lemar, or even a Mahrez or a Draxler is exactly the kind of player Arsenal are screaming for.

Let me explain, Manchester City have spend a lot of money on defender these last few windows, but the reason they have is because they are buying players who can contribute better to their attack. They are bought due to their ability on the ball, rather than off the ball. Arsenal do face a similar problem, Cech is terrible with the ball at his feet, although as just a goalkeeper, in terms of making saves and commanding his area, he is still elite. But, because Arsenal are trying to play a possession based game, they need better ball players.

So why does that mean they need Lemar? He isn’t a ball playing centre back or a sweeper, keeper. Well, if you have the ball, and you turn possession into chances and them into goals, you heavily mitigate against having a poor defence. That is, the object of the game is to score, not to not concede. The biggest problem Arsenal have had this season, especially away from home, is a relying far too heavily on their full backs for width and for a final ball. Having genuine players who can play wide, not strikers out of position, will allow for greater width to stretch the play, so the side to side passing then a quick ball inside would actually be more effective.

Secondly, Arsenal lack players who can beat a defender or carry the ball over a distance to set up an attack and really increase the tempo. The last player to do this really effectively was probably Rosicky, who could collect the ball, and in a burst beat an opponent and be sprinting into the opposition half. Iwobi, to his credit, has the potential to do this, as did Chamberlain before him, but a lack of a good pass or shot at the end of it means he wastes possession far too much to take the risks he takes. Will £58.5m rated Thomas Lemar finally be that player for us?
