Arsene Wenger is ready to bring back England under-21 international Calum Chambersto the Arsenal first team following the sale of Gabriel Paulista to Valencia.

The defender – capable of playing as a right-back or in the middle – started the first game of last season against Liverpool (scoring in a 4-3 loss) spent the majority of the campaign on loan at Middlesbrough, where he was rather impressive.

However, upon returning to north London, he’s been surprisingly frozen out of the Arsenal. Featuring for just 45 minutes in a pre-season friendly against Benfica late last month, Chambers had been left out of the squad completely for games against Leicester City and Stoke City.

But developments this week may have offered him a lifeline.

As reported by The Mirror, the former Southampton man is back in the Frenchman’s plans following the £10m sale of Gabriel to the La Liga outfit.

The 22-year-old defender managed to rack up 25 appearances in the 2016/17 Premier League season, vital experience for any young player developing.

It came as a huge surprise to some Gunners supporters when it was reported they were close to offloading Chambers to Crystal Palace this summer, but could not agree a fee with the Eagles which caused the deal to collapse.

Arsenal currently have just five recognised centre-halves including Chambers, which isn’t a great deal when Arsene Wenger continues to operate with a three man defence, and this could provide the Englishman with some opportunities as the season progresses.
