David Ospina has delivered the news most Gooners have been dreading: he’s staying to fight for his place at Arsenal.
Despite Ospina pretty much confirming that he wanted a move away from Arsenal at the end of last season in the hunt for consistent playing time, it appears that the goalkeeper is staying in north London to ‘fight until to end’. Good grief.
“I have a contract here, I’m happy and I’m going to fight to the end, I want to continue and win a job,”he said.
“That’s what I’m working for, I’ve been working for three years and now I’m waiting for the opportunity.”
The 28-year-old has two years left on his current deal and it seems that he has every intention of seeing this out, even though he only made 14 appearances for the Gunners last season.
The six-foot shot-stopper will presumably still play second fiddle to 35-year-old Petr Cech, since, although the former Chelsea ‘keeper is far from his best, he’s still head and shoulders (quite literally) above Ospina.
Not only will Arsenal fans be annoyed by the fact that their team seems to be keeping hold of a pretty mediocre – at best – goalkeeper, but they’ve done so after selling Wojciech Szczesny, who was the pair of safe hands most Gooners believed was the club’s future #1.
The 27-year-old signed for Juventus after two years on loan at Roma, where the Poland international became one of most solid ‘keepers in Europe, according to Squawka.
Ospina previously had apparent interest from Fenerbahce but, for whatever reason, this obviously fell through.
And now Arsenal are stuck with a ‘keeper who instills hope in previously no one, going into what could be one of the biggest seasons in recent history. Fun times.
