Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger revealed he may only bring in two players this summer, despite rumours of the Gunners planning a squad overhaul after a disappointing campaign.

Speaking to beIN Sports, Wenger admitted there won’t be a summer splurge but defended the decision by highlighting how the richest clubs don’t always enjoy the greatest success. Having signed a new two-year-deal with Arsenal, the Gunners were expected to make wholesale changes after missing out on the top-four and being a considerable distance off title-winners Chelsea.

But comments made from the long-term manager suggest otherwise which may not go down well with supporters. Arsenal have already signed Schalke 04 left-back Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer this summer which could mean they only target one or two more players to add to the squad, despite the futures of Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs, Lucas Perez, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez being unknown.

“(We will sign) between a maximum of two or three (players). We cannot spend as much as many other clubs because some clubs have external resources that allow them to be basically unlimited. We can spend money because we have managed the club well. Let’s not forget the amount of money spent is not a guarantee of success,” said Wenger.

Arsenal are reportedly looking at Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez and AS Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe. Despite so many players potentially exiting the Emirates Stadium ahead of the new season, it appears they won’t be bringing too many in.
