The hiring of Darren Burgess is expected to be announced this coming week, according to reports, with the fitness expert to be in overall charge of medical, fitness, psychology and performance analysis.
Essentially he will oversee all technical areas of the club, aside from scouting.
The appointment comes after a sustained period of many fans demanding change at the club in a bid to be more competitive. Many of those supporters wanted a new manager to replace Arsene Wenger, but with the Frenchman signing a new contract the club were aware of a need to be seen making alternative tweaks behind the scenes.
The potential creation of a Director of Sport role had been mooted, however Wenger was against the idea.
Burgess, who is currently working with Port Adelaide in Australia, is considered to be a leader in his field of expertise which focuses on fitness and conditioning.
According to reports in Australia his contract with Port Adelaide expires at the end of the month, after which he can make the switch to Arsenal.
He previously spent two years working for Liverpool, a spell which saw him serve under Kenny Dalglish, Roy Hodgson and Brenan Rodgers at Anfield.
He’s also worked with the Australian national team in the past.
