Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed Sokratis Papastathopoulos is likely to join Arsenal this summer.
The Greek defender is keen on joining Arsenal and is well known to the Gunners’ head of recruitment Sven Mislintat from his time in Germany.
Arsenal have signed Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bernd Leno so far this summer and Unai Emery is keen to add further experience to his squad.
Dortmund value Papastathopoulos at around £18m and though Zorc insists a deal isn’t imminent he has confirmed he could be heading for Arsenal.
‘It tends to go there [the deal] that’s right. But things are not completely finalised yet,’ said Zorc.
‘And I will not work with you now and talk about the rumour mill, which includes 27 new BVB players since the end of May.’
Emery has been handed a modest budget to spend at Arsenal but Jack Wilshere’s departure should free up some space on the wage bill.
The England midfielder has decided to leave the club, despite agreeing to take a pay cut on a new deal.
Wilshere wanted assurances over his role under Emery but the Spaniard told the midfielder he would play a bit-part role next term.
