Arsenal have seemingly neglected to give Joel Campbell a squad number for the 2017/18 season after confirming some changes elsewhere in the squad today.
Summer signing Alexandre Lacazette has been given the number 9 shirt, with Lucas Perez, who wore it last season, switching to 28.
Campbell, 25, spent last season out on loan at Sporting Lisbon but had held the 28 shirt before he left, with his lack of an assigned number this season surely meaning he’s on his way out.
The Costa Rica international arrived at the Emirates Stadium as an exciting young prospect back in 2011, but spent some time out on loan to gain a work permit to make him eligible to play in the UK.
Campbell finally broke into the Arsenal first-team during the 2015/16 campaign, but didn’t sufficiently impress Arsene Wenger before heading out on loan once again last season.
With just three goals in 28 games in Portugal, it looks like the forward’s Gunners career is over as Wenger plans further signings to improve his attacking options.
Monaco’s Thomas Lemar is a top target for the Frenchman, while Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez has also been linked on a number of occasions this summer.
