ARSENAL’s chances of winning the Carabao Cup rest on the shoulders of Mesut Ozil, claims pundit Tony Cottee.
Ozil recently signed a new contract at Arsenal, ending speculation over his future.
The German has been in fine form for the Gunners this season but often comes under criticism from supporters when the team is on the wrong end of a bad result.
Former West Ham striker Cottee is a huge fan of Ozil and reckons he can lead Arsenal to glory against Manchester City on Sunday if he has a good game.
“He’s been given a new contract, which is a huge boost for him,” Cottee said on Sky Sports.
“I thought he was going to leave at the end of the season, his contract was being run down. Everyone thought he was going to leave, he’s been given that new contract.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s such a tremendous player but I think he is an easy prey if things aren’t going so well.
“If Arsenal are losing games or conceding goals it’s ‘Mesut Ozil’s not working hard enough, he’s not doing this, he’s not doing that’.
“I think we forget all the assists and all the goals he creates and the goals he scores as well. He’s a top player, I love watching him play.
“I think the one thing Arsene Wenger has done over the years with his flair players is he’s allowed them to express themselves and go out on the field of play.
“Yes, you’ve got to stay in the team tactics and formation, but someone like Ozil you’ve got to let roam round a little bit. He’s just a joy to watch when he’s on his game, his little dinks, his little flicks.
“I think he will come into his own and if Arsenal want to beat Man City at the weekend, and it is a big if, he needs to have a good game.”
