Arsenal’s chase for Bernard could already be over with the player’s father announcing the player has chosen to join FC Porto. The midfielder was favouring a move to Arsenal before Brazil team-mate Hulk insisted the Portuguese club would help the 20-year old develop better.
The Gunners were reported to have lodged a £21 million bid but it has come to light that the club are yet to make an official bid but still have a firm interest in the youngster.
“Nothing is decided yet but we know there is interest from Arsenal. However, there has been nothing official from them.”
Bernard’s father, Delio Duarte, added.
“Hulk has convinced Bernard that Porto would be better from him at this stage of his career.”
The Zenit St. Petersburg forward spent four seasons at FC Porto where he made a fierce reputation for himself and believes it’s the best place for Bernard to develop in to a better player as he can compete for championships as well as competing in the Champions League.
Arsenal are trying to clear out players to make room for new arrivals and are waiting on Gervinho’s exit to Roma before acquiring a new attacking midfielder. Andrey Arshavin’s absence also opens up a space on the wing but Arsenal youngsters Ryo Miyaichi and Serge Gnabry are expected to contest for a place.
Arsene Wenger has been told that Bernard will be available for no less than £22 million but while talks between Roma and Arsenal continue to drag on regarding Gervinho, Porto continue to close in on Bernard with Arsenal close to losing yet another transfer target.
