It seems Arsenal won’t be having a smooth sailing for any of their transfer target this summer. Jovetic that was Wenger’s top target was rivaled by Juventus, ditto for Higuain. Even Grenier, Liverpool battled Arsenal for him. Now, it is Lille’s star Dimitri Payet, Marseille seem interested in him and have opened the bidding for him according to reports in France.
L’Equipe reports that Marseille have made their move with a cheeky £10.5m bid for both Payet and his team-mate Florian Thauvin with 7 million Pounds for Payet and 3.5 million Pounds for Thauvin but the offer was scorned by Lille.
The implication of the development is that the Lille star could be available for the right price which isn’t likely to be beyond the reach of Arsenal. Also, Gervinho could be key to Arsenal landing Payet. Marseille are in the market for a winger who is adept at dribbling and finding the net. Recently, they were credited with interest in Gervinho and should they get him, they might ease off in their pursuit of Payet. Gervinho isn’t a bad player and while in the French Ligue 1, he thrived . In his last 2 seasons at Lille, he had league goals and assists in double figures. He hasn’t really hit it in the Premier League and that might have dented his
confidence but a return to his favourite league could bring back the good old days.
Lille might be open to selling Payet but might be reluctant selling him to a domestic rival and that gives advantage to Arsenal. Let’s hope for once in a long while, Wenger will go for a natural winger rather than playing central attacking midfielders as wingers.
