Arsenal have started the season brilliantly and they have raked up 10 wins in 11 matches with the 10 wins coming consecutively after the shocking opening day loss to Aston Villa at the Emirates. Pundits have attributed Arsenal’s enviable run to the arrival of record signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. While I won’t dispute the fact that the German has contributed to the continuity of the good form with his 3 assists in 3 Premier league games, he hasn’t been the reason for it.
Arsenal stunning form isn’t a flash in the pan, it’s a continuity of the good run we started in the twilight of last season enroute our run to making top 4. Ozil is just the cynosure of all eyes because he is an expensive signing that arrived from Real Madrid with the switch generating lots of interests but there are other unsung heroes in the Arsenal team. Giroud, Flamini, Sagna and Ramsey. Giroud hasn’t only been scoring, he has also been initiating attacks and willing to drop back to defend when Arsenal are under pressure.
He did that very well against Swansea. Flamini has acted as a shield for the back 4 and his presence has allowed Ramsey and Ozil to cause more havoc in the opponents area. They can afford to expend their energies initiating attacks rather than defending. How about the irrepressible Ramsey? The Welshman has been nothing short of stunning. He has been doing his midfield duties excellently while also getting goals and some of them have won us points (his 2 goals against Sunderland won us an extra 2 points, ditto for his goal against Swansea). With all these players putting in serious shifts, it is foolhardy for anyone to say Ozil is the reason for our good form. Agreed he has made Arsenal thick but the other players playing well have made us very thick.
