Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes Mesut Özil ‘left a big club to join a club with big ambitions’.
The Portuguese boss managed Özil last season when the pair was at Real Madrid and believes the German left to join a new project happening at Arsenal but was still surprised to see the move happen.
“Yes, I am surprised but that’s football, that’s the transfer market.”
“Mesut left a big club but comes to the biggest league in the world and he comes to a club with big ambitions, so I think if Mesut did it he was happy to do it. And if Madrid sold him it was good for them and their ideas.”
The German made his debut for the Gunners in the 3-1 win over Sunderland, taking just ten minutes to deliver his first assist in English football as Olivier Giroud opened the scoring. HE made further key passes, mainly to Theo Walcott but the Englishman was particularly wasteful in front of goal. He was subbed off towards the end of the game due to his sickness but received a standing ovation from the travelling fans.
