Arsenal have announced the signing of Jessica Samuelsson from Linköpings FC.
The Sweden international could potentially replace Alex Scott at right-back. The 32-year-old might be heading for the exit this summer after being at Arsenal on-and-off her entire career.
The 25-year-old came through the ranks at Åby IF before signing for Smedby AIS in 2007 and spending two years there.
Samuelsson, who’s been capped 24 times for her country, leaves Linköpings FC, where she made 87 appearances and scored four goals.
While there, she won the Svenska Supercupen (2010).
She also had a loan spell at Melbourne Victory in 2013 where she featured 13 times, won the W-League and was named 2014 Player of the Year in Australia.
Samuelsson win the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship with Sweden in 2012, and a silver medal in the Olympics last year.
The Swede also played three matches for her country at the Euros this summer. However, unfortunately her side were knocked out by the hosts and eventual tournament winners, the Netherlands, in the quarter-finals.
The highly-rated full-back is really excited to get started for her new club and claims that she sees this as the next step in her career.
“I’m so happy to join the club and to be a part of such a great club as Arsenal. I’m really excited for the season to start and to play my first game in the Arsenal shirt,” she told Arsenal’s website.
“This is a new step in my career and I hope to make progress as a player. I’m going to do everything that I can to help Arsenal win titles.”
Manager, Pedro Martinez Losa, is glad to have her on board.
“We are delighted to welcome Jessica to Arsenal,” he said. “I’ve been impressed with her performances for a long time now, so there was no doubt that she would make a huge impact in the Women’s Euro tournament this summer.
“She is recognised internationally as a strong and talented defender who will bring so much to our squad.”
