The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to get back into contention at the top of the Premier League. Though results have been better in recent weeks, it has been a tumultuous season for the Gunners so far, with results clearly not up to par – with a loss against Watford over the weekend serving as a painful reminder of their early-season woes. Arsene Wenger has been under pressure, and with the Premier League not going well, Arsenal’s Europa League campaign is taking on a heightened significance.

With the Europa League now as important as ever, the Premier League always ongoing and domestic cups beginning to crop up, Arsenal – like many of their Premier League rivals – have a very congested run of fixtures over the coming weeks. The last thing they need, then, is another injury problem, but according to Football.London, they have got just that today.

Football.London report that defender Calum Chambers has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hip problem. Whilst Thursday night’s game against Red Star Belgrade was originally seen as the latest expected return date for the Englishman, it is now said that his return could be pushed back by as many as TWO weeks – with the defender still yet to return to training.

Chambers has, of course, yet to appear in the Premier League or in Europe this season, with his only game time coming in the Carabao Cup. It’s frustrating for both the player and the club, as he would undoubtedly otherwise be getting minutes for the Gunners. Arsene Wenger has had numerous fitness issues in defence so far this term, but rather than making the most of that opportunity, Chambers has been forced to simply become another statistic as Arsenal’s woes worsen.

With a tough trip to Everton on the horizon, Arsenal need all the depth that they can get, but unfortunately, there is no respite for Arsene Wenger.  With a November return now looking likely, the Frenchman is going to have to make-do for the next few weeks at least.

Landlord’s Verdict

Arsenal can’t afford to rush Chambers back, or he could suffer yet another setback in his recovery.

With so many fixtures, Arsenal need depth, but there is a fine line between recovery and fitness, and Wenger must be sure to tread around it wisely.

He should be able to cope, but this situation is far from ideal.
