Former Manchester United favourite Teddy Sheringham believes his former club should signed Mesut Özil over Marouane Fellaini on transfer deadline day. David Moyes opted for Everton midfielder Fellaini in a £28 million deal hours after Özil completed a club record £42.4 million move to Arsenal and Sheringham feels Arsenal did the better business.
“Out of Fellaini and Özil you would really want Özil to be your playmaker. I think Fellaini is too similar in a way to Michael Carrick, but I love Carrick as a player, he makes things tick.”
“It make you think ‘where is Fellaini going to play?’. If you spend £28 million on someone you’d expect them to be playing.”
Fellaini has played in both United fixtures since his signing, making his debut from the bench against Crystal before starting against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
Mesut Özil has also featured twice for Arsenal starting against both Sunderland and Marseille, registering his first assist after just 11 minutes. It remains to be seen who will go on to have the best season but not only has Özil’s signing improved the squad, the attitude around the club has grown significantly more pleasant too.
