Manchester United are set for a bidding war with Arsenal for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria. The Argentinian wants to stay at the Bernabeu but he could used to balance the books after a summer of heavy spending from Madrid.
The La Liga giants splashed out over £60 million on Spanish duo Isco and Asier Illarramendi earlier in the summer but got £40 million back with the departures of Gonzalo Higuain, Raul Albiol and Jose Callejon to Napoli. However with Madrid set to snap up Gareth Bale for a reported £94 million, Carlo Ancelotti wants to free up space in his squad while managing the clubs finances better.
Arsenal have had a frustrating summer so far missing out on key targets Higuain, Luiz Gustavo and Luis Suarez and Wenger has identified Di Maria as the clubs marquee signing.
Manchester United are also interested in the South American while PSG are monitoring the player’s situation. Madrid are asking for a minimum fee of £26 million but are expecting bids in excess of £30 million.
The Gunners have been heavily criticised for their summer inactivity following their defeat to Aston Villa but away victories at Fenerbahce and Fulham have eased the pressure off Arsene Wenger for the time being. Speaking after the 3-0 win in Turkey, Wenger promised the club would make strides in the market before the deadline.
