Riyad Mahrez is keen on a move to Arsenal, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
Earlier in the summer, Mahrez made his intentions to leave Leicester City clear in a published statement that we previously reported on. He told the media that the previous year he had sat down with the bosses at the Foxes and agreed that he would stay with them for one more year to help transition into European competition.
However, now that he has done this, he feels he has the right to leave.
Next, in an interview on Bein Sports, Arsene Wenger said that he liked the player, and that Arsenal hadn’t made a bit yet, but they might do (or they might not). Arsenal had been rumoured to be interested in the player last summer, but since Mahrez agreed to stay, nothing came of this.
Now the Daily Mail are reporting that the player has decided he wants to go to Arsenal.
Mahrez played a key part in Leicester’s title winning campaign, reaching double digits in both goals and assists in the league that year. He then followed this up with a less impressive league showing in 2016/17, however he did continue to perform well in the Champions League, contributing to six goals in his nine European appearances.
If he can replicate anything like his 2015/16 league form, or European form the following year, he would represent a strong acquisition by the Gunners.
With interest in Thomas Lemar still dominating the headlines in France, it remains to be seen which deal Arsenal choose to try and push over the line.
