Arsenal have sealed the transfer of Lucas Pérez from Deportivo La Coruna and, only finalisation of paperwork stands between the official announcement of the capture of the Spaniard.
Perez notched an impressive 17 goals for Deportivo last season – despite only playing primarily as a centre-forward last term – and the 27-year old represents a good buy due to his versatility.
The Spanish striker is capable of playing both as striker or wide on the right side of attack, so Perez will give Arséne Wenger plenty of options as regards selection. While some Arsenal supporters will argue that Perez is not the marquee signing they were expecting their darling side to sign, the Spaniard clearly gives them a better-looking squad than that of last campaign.
Take it for granted that Wenger will not use Perez as a centre-forward – with Olivier Giroud his preferred choice – the French boss is likely to field Perez on the right wing as a replacement for Theo Walcott who does not appear to be showing signs of improvement.
Although Giroud has been criticised on a number of occasions over the years, the ex-Montpellier striker still has much to offer and his return of 82 goals in four seasons for Arsenal is evidential support. Hence, Giroud is still likely to start with Perez needing time to settle. The pace and creativity of Perez will also be of huge benefit to Giroud.
Arsenal’s possible line-up with Perez: Cech; Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal; Xhaka, Coquelin; Perez, Ozil, Sanchez; Giroud.
