Recently, Daily Mail reported that Arsenal are in the hunt for a new defensive midfielder. The Gunners have been linked with many defensive midfielders recently. Wenger was linked with a swoop for West Brom’s Mulumbu, PSG’s Blaise Matuidi and Southampton Morgan Schnerderlin in the winter window but deal for all of them fell through.
Now, it seems Arsenal are ready to return to their first target Lars Bender as the club have complied an extensive dossier on the 24-year-old according to daily mail. Of all the targets, Bender seems the best bet. He is younger than Matuidi and more experienced than Schnerderlin. Curiosity might arise as to why Arsenal need another defensive midfielder since they already have Flamini and Arteta.
Flamini and Arteta seem to be doing a good job this season but the Gunners need to start planning for their long term replacement since they are already in their 30s and closing in on 30 already. That means they won’t be around for too long again and besides, they could be susceptible to injuries.
Bender would be a good long term replacement for Arteta as he can play as a holding midfielder and a good box to box midfielder. There might be fears that his arrival could stifle Ramsey and Wilshere, the club’s two main box to box midfielders. I don’t think so as Bender and Flamini could be the club’s holding midfielders while the either of Ramsey or Wilshere could act as their partner in the double pivot system.
With the player just recently extending his stay at Bayer Leverkusen, he isn’t likely to leave on the cheap but with Arsene Wenger’s huge summer war-chest, he should be able to land him.
