GUILLEM BALAGUE has claimed Arsenal were NEVER interested in signing Kostas Manolas from Roma and attempted to sign someone else in the final hours of the transfer window.
Reports from Italy late last night suggested the Gunners were planning a last-ditch attempt to bring in the central defender.
Both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had already arrived at the Emirates to strengthen their forward options.
But with an ageing defence, Arsene Wenger was hopeful of bringing in someone to help their leaky defence.
Jonny Evans was their preferred choice but pulled out of the deal due to West Brom refusing to drop their valuation.
Balague tweeted earlier in the day: “I have the impression #AFC are thinking of one last try for another defender but it’s perhaps too late.”
And after the deadline had passed and the Manolas rumours came to nothing, Balague then said: “It was too late. But it was not Manolas.”
The Spanish football expert doesn’t elaborate further on who Arsenal were targeting as their alternative to Evans.
