The French defender limped out of training after taking a knock to his ankle and will miss Arsenal’s next pre-season friendly against Nagoya Grampus Eight. He could also be rested for their final Asia Tour friendly against Urawa Red Diamonds to ensure he recovers as quickly as possible
Koscielny’s injury added to Thomas Vermaelen’s back complaint, which he aggravated while on international duty with Belgium, leaves Arsenal very short at the back with only Per Mertesacker as the only senior recognised centre-back.
The club do have Ignasi Miquel, but the young Spaniard hasn’t played many games for the senior side while Bacary Sagna was pushed to a more central role against Vietnam in their previous friendly.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for Swansea City defender Ashley Williams but bulked at the £10 million asking price. However, Wenger is desperate to add reinforcements to his currently thin back line and may pay over the odds to make that happen.
The last thing Wenger would have wanted would have been injuries but Vermaelen and Koscielny could both miss the start of the season which leaves the Frenchman exactly 6 weeks to bring in defensive cover as well as other transfer targets he may have before the summer transfer window slams shut.
