Arsenal star Olivier Giroud was linked with a move away from Arsenal this past summer. According to reports during the summer, the Frenchman was unhappy with the lack of regular starting berths at the club and knew the signing of Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon would further reduce his playing time with the Gunners.
He was linked with Everton, Marseille and a host of other European clubs. Although he ended up staying at Arsenal, there is still the possibility he could be sold, as so far this season, his appearances have mostly been reduced to cup games and a late substitute in the Premier League.
And to replace him, Arsene Wenger is said to be ready to sign long-term Arsenal target Karim Benzema. In the last four to five years, there has been no transfer window gone by without Benzema being linked with a move to the Emirates. The former Lyon star has struggled in particular this season and there have been talks Real Madrid would be willing to sell him and replace him with Inter Milan star Mauro Icardi.
According to reports, Arsenal have tabled a bid worth £40 million for Benzema, which was instantly rejected by Real Madrid for being “insulting“. Although Benzema appears surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, the club is not willing to sell him for £40 million, which, if true, would be a big blow to Arsenal.
Although he has been woeful so far this season, Benzema is still one of the best goal scorers in the world. He is more of a “play making striker”. He doesn’t score 30-45 goals per season but his presence in the Madrid team gets the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo. Hence, it is not a coincidence the Portuguese forward has struggled this season as Benzema hasn’t been doing very well.
The Frenchman is no doubt a quality player but he is 29 and soon to be 30, and for £40 million, I think Arsenal can do better. With Lacazette at the club already, Arsenal do not really need Benzema. If Wenger really needs another striker, I would advise he move for Timo Werner of RB Leipzig. The 21-year-old is younger and likely to be available for a similar fee.
