Arsenal are in the hunt to sign Real Madrid sensation James Rodriguez this month as they look to secure a Mesut Ozil replacement, according to the Daily Mail.
The newspaper claim the Gunners can land the playmaker, 27, from loan club Bayern Munich if they pay the £3million to which the Spanish giants would be entitled for the final six months of his two-year loan.
The Mail report The Bundesliga club are willing for Arsenal to take Rodriguez off their hands despite having a £39.5million option to buy him permanently this summer.
Good move for Arsenal?
How the mighty have fallen. Rodriguez cost Real Madrid £71million (BBC Sport) when he was signed in 2014 as a typical Galactico signing after winning the 2014 World Cup Golden Boot. Like Ozil, the left-footed attacker has lost his way, and he has slipped down the pecking order at Bayern this season. His talent is not in doubt and his Bayern numbers are actually quite decent – 11 goals and 16 assists from 50 matches. He has scored and created plenty of goals in the Spanish, German, French and Portugese leagues. The big question is whether Rodriguez has the appetite to fit into the team structure at an elite club like Arsenal.
Likely to happen?
Given that Arsenal went into overdrive at the end of last January, when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was signed and Henrikh Mkhitaryan swapped with Alexis Sanchez, the arrival of a global star cannot be ruled out. It would seem unlikely at this stage that the Gunners would push the boat out for Rodriguez, despite his apparent availability.
