Mesut Özil’s arrival at Arsenal could propel Olivier Giroud to the Golden boot this season. The German’s ability to pick a pass combined with Giroud’s new found confidence and ability in front of goal could work well for the Gunners as the season pans out.
The French striker has netted four goals in Arsenal’s opening five games and is currently joint top scorer in the Premier League alongside Christian Benteke of Aston Villa and Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge.
The creative influx of Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott helped Giroud to 17 goals in all competitions last season and their chemistry has grown since them leading to his great start this year. Özil’s most prominent attribute is his ability to provide an assist, something that will help Giroud even further.
The German has provided the most assists in Europe since 2007 and he will bring that ability to the Emirates to make an already in-form striker even better. Fans are still divided on the French striker with his goalscoring form marred by his apparent ease at scoring obvious chances. However, statistics show that his first season in English football is almost identical to prolific former striker Robin Van Persie.
They both netted 11 goals whilst key components such as shots on target and conversation rate are almost identical. Van Persie went on to score over 100 goals for the Gunners and was injured throughout most of his career in North London, Giroud’s stats show that he could eclipse Van Persie in almost every area and with Özil behind him, that might just prove to be true.
