Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has admitted to a frustrating and sleepless night in Madrid after the Gunners were knocked out of the Europa League by Atletico Madrid on Thursday evening.
The Gunners blew their last chance of winning a trophy this season by losing 1-0 in Spain and exiting the Europa League 2-1 on aggregate.
As a result Arsenal will not be playing Champions League football next season, with another campaign in the Europa League looming, while they cannot now send Arsene Wenger on his way with a piece of silverware.
And Ozil is disappointed with how the game unfolded in Madrid.
He took to social media to write: “What a frustrating, sleepless night in Madrid!
“This was our last chance to win a trophy this season, our last chance to lift another [piece of] silverware with our boss.
“Still two more things to say: Thanks to all Gunners for the away support. And get well soon Laurent Koscielny.”
Ozil was heavily criticised for his lacklustre performance against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital, with the German increasingly being accused by some of regularly failing to turn up for big games.
Arsenal will now bid to end the season on a positive note by beating Burnley, Leicester and Huddersfield in their remaining three games of the campaign.
