Alex Iwobi has talked to the media about his aims for the upcoming season and his thoughts on the 2016/17 campaign.

Part of Arsenal’s academy since 2004, Iwobi first started to make a claim on a first-team position in the Emirates Cup 2015, when he impressed and scored against Lyon.

He went on to make 21 appearances in the 2015/16 campaign in all competitions, and followed this up with another 38 in 2016/17.

But Iwobi has told the Mirror via Goal that he hopes to push for even more in the coming season. Although he started a lot towards the start of last year, his appearances then dropped off when he fell out of form towards the end of the season.

Alex outlined how he thought he could achieve his playing aims, saying: “I need to be a bit more hungry this year, add more goals and assists. At the start of last season I played a lot. I want to do that all year. Consistency is the key with me.”

With only six senior goals for the senior side in his 59 appearances, it’s understandable this is where Iwobi is looking to improve. He has sometimes looked nervy in his finishing, but once he gets going he should be able to build on the confidence each goal gives him.

The young Nigerian international has received similar advice on what to focus on from the Arsenal manager. “Goals win games. I need to add that. Arsene Wenger spoke to me towards the end of last season. He said ‘show me you’re able to do that and I’ll give you a chance’.”

After a couple of impressive performances so far in pre-season, including an assist for debutant Alexandre Lacazette, Iwobi is clearly focused on working hard to make the step up to the next level individually. Hopefully he can keep it going.
