Manchester United tried but failed in a last minute attempt to hijack Mesut Özil’s move to Arsenal. The Premier League champions had targeted Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera but after the move collapsed, the club tried to lure Özil to Old Trafford.

The Gunners announced the deal for the German less than an hour before the deadline in a major £42.4 million deal. The club had expressed an interest in the playmaker several weeks ago, which was one of a few factors that persuaded Özil to make the move to North London.

PSG were also accredited with an interest in the 24-year old but an offer from the French club was turned down with the midfielder opting for Arsenal. It is believed Manchester United were offered Özil three weeks ago but the club decided to pass on the move, a decision they now regret.

David Moyes was confident he would be able to sign Herrera from Bilbao but the deal collapsed late in to deadline day forcing him to sign Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini. Before his bid for the Belgian, United attempted to snuff Arsenal’s bid for Özil but the deal was already done.

The club has been uplifted with the arrival of the German born Turk with several of the clubs player announcing their delight at his signing. Theo Walcott was one of the first to speak to the media regarding Özil.

“He has shown for his club and country that he is a fantastic player. It’s very exciting. I played against him with the Under-21s and we lost 4-0. He showed his qualities then. He has shown that for many years. I am looking forward to playing with him.”
