Cesc Fabregas has paid tribute to former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein.

Dein served as Arsenal vice-chairman from 1983 to 2007, combining the role with the vice-chairmanship of the FA from 2000 to 2004.

The 74-year-old is one of the most influential individuals in Arsenal’s history, playing the crucial role behind Wenger’s appointment in 1996.

He was a popular figure in north London, with his exit thought to be a factor behind Thierry Henry’s departure for Barcelona.

“I know the players aren’t happy,” said Ian Wright at the time. “I know Thierry Henry’s not happy.

“We’re talking about a man who goes into the dressing room after every single game, shakes every player by the hand and who knows all the youth team players.”

Fabregas, one of the many players Dein brought to the club, has paid tribute to him.

Great dinner with the first man to sign me professionally,’ Fabregas said.

“It was never the same after you left.’
