Nemanja Vidic has urged Arsenal to focus on their defence in the build-up to next season as they look to try and challenge for the title.
The north London side have struggled to challenge for the Premier League title in recent seasons under Arsene Wenger and they currently find themselves in sixth place in the table.
Arsenal missed out on a top four finish for the first time under Wenger last term and it looks as though the north London side are going to finish outside the Champions League qualification spots for the second campaign running.
The Gunners do still have hope of qualifying for the Champions League next season by winning the Europa League this term – but they are set to come up against Spanish giants Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals.
And former Manchester United defender Vidic believes that the north London side will have to focus more on their defending ahead of next season.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Vidic said: “I think for me, Arsenal, when they get to pre-season they think about scoring goals.
“They have to go and say ‘we’re going to have a clean sheet’ in pre-season because that’s what they have to learn.
“To defend and that’s the key if they want to challenge for the title.
“I think in the end they will score 70 goals a season, but they will concede 40.
“The last two seasons they’ve conceded 44 and today 45.
“For a team that is in the top seven, to concede that many goals, I think they are playing well to be in that position.”
Arsenal will take on Atletico Madrid at The Emirates in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie on Thursday 26 April.
The Gunners will be hoping to take a big step forward towards reaching the final of the competition.
