Much has been said of Arsenal’s attempts of brining in a striker with the club reportedly close to signing Gonzalo Higuain while interest in Wayne Rooney and David Villa remain strong.
The club’s search of defensive players has taken a step back as a result, however Arsenal’s need of a centre-back has been highlighted with the understanding that the club is monitoring Tin Jedvaj of Dinamo Zagreb.
The defender is rated as one of Croatia’s best prospects and attracting interest from Roma with the Italian club failing with a £5 million bid. Arsenal is now ready to steal in to sign the 17-year old for £6 million. Arsenal have dealt with Zagreb before having signed striker Eduardo from the Croatian club before with Luka Modric, now of Real Madrid, also coming from the club.
Jedvaj’s quality is proven by his national call-up despite his young age and could make his international debut soon. The fact that Croatia is ranked fourth in the world also shows the youngsters talents.
Wenger is keen to add defensive cover to his team to back-up first choice Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker while offering Thomas Vermaelen competition. The club is letting Seb Squillaci leave at the end of the month while Johan Djourou is expected to be sold. The club was after Swansea City’s Ashley Williams but has been put off by the £10 million asking price.
Arsenal’s recent financial rise means they could afford defensive heavyweights like Raul Albiol, Martin Skrtel and Toby Alderweird who all want to leave their respective clubs, while the valuation of Williams shouldn’t be a problem. However, Wenger is still watching the money and will not spend it carelessly.
The potential of Jedvaj excites him and at only 17, £6 million looks a bargain. The Croatian wonderkid has attracted much interest across Europe but once again it looks as if Wenger is leading the race for his signature.
