Despite promoting a number of Spain’s Under-21 stars to the national team, manager Julen Lopetegui has turned down the chance to hand Hector Bellerin a senior call-up ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The Arsenal right back played his part in helping his national side reach the final of the European Under-21 Championship, yet the 22-year-old has missed out on selection for his country’s games against Italy and Liechtenstein at the beginning of September.
Spain were impressive in the tournament in Poland back in June, eventually losing 1-0 in the final against Germany.
Marco Asensio, Gerard Deulofeu, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Saul Niguez were all promoted by Lopetegui, however Bellerin was overlooked by the former Porto manager.
Although Bellerin won’t be part of the squad, his Arsenal teammate Nacho Monreal has won a call-up for his country’s World Cup qualification games.
The 31-year-old last appeared for Spain in their 4-0 victory over Macedonia in November and has appeared solely as a centre back for the Gunners this season.
