Arsenal have identified Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld as the answer to their defensive woes.
The Gunners had a defensive relapse in their defeat to Aston Villa and although they managed a clean sheet against Fenerbahce, injuries and suspensions have reduced Arsenal to just one fit centre-half in Per Mertesacker.
Thomas Vermaelen is unlikely to be back until October while Bacary Sagna will have to play centrally in Laurent Koscielny’s absence due to his red card last weekend. Arsene Wenger is incredibly thin in the centre of his defence and is keen to add some numbers to his squad.
The club have had a very quiet summer with Arsene Wenger only brining in young striker Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre on a free transfer. However, his comments after the win in Turkey have given fans hope that there will be new signings before the window closes.
“From August 21 until September 2 you have 12 days, so a lot will happen. It starts now.”
Alderweireld is being tipped as the first new signing through the door with the defender’s contract at Ajax running out next summer. A bid of only £6 million is thought to be enough to secure his transfer while international team-mate and former Ajax colleague Vermaelen could help lure him to the Emirates.
