The Karim Benzema to Arsenal rumours have started early this year with Don Balon reporting that we’ve tabled an offer worth around £35m for the Real Madrid striker.
Benzema has been constantly linked with a move to the Emirates with speculation circulating during virtually every transfer window over the past decade.
Arsene Wenger was a fan of the striker during his days at Lyon before he made a move to Madrid in 2009 and we’ve reportedly come close to signing Benzema on several occasions.
The rumour mill is already in full swing ahead of the summer and Don Balon claim Arsenal have now put an offer worth £35m on the table for Benzema’s signature after Madrid decided to cash-in.
The Spanish outlet says Florentino Perez is finally ready to sell the French international but Borussia Dortmund have submitted the best offer so far at around £53m – which is significantly more than Arsenal’s reported bid.
However, that may not be the end of it as although Madrid obviously want to sell Benzema to the highest bidder, Don Balon claim the striker has no interest in going to Germany and either wants to join Arsenal or remain at the Bernabeu.
No doubt Benzema was a world class striker in his day and I’d have loved to have seen him play for Arsenal as I think he’d have been a huge success here.
However, despite these questionable reports from Spain, I feel that ship has sailed. Benzema turns 31 later this year and has been in poor form this season with just 9 goals so far.
Not only that, Wenger has already said he’s not in the market for any more strikers after splashing over £100m on Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in recent windows.
This won’t be the last time Benzema is linked to Arsenal – of that you can be sure – but I don’t think there is any chance he’ll be coming to north London this summer. Or any summer for that matter.
