Mustafa Özil, agent and father of Mesut Özil, has further defended his sons move to Arsenal after damaging reports from Spain. He had already blasted Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for not being a ‘man with honour’, claiming his son was used as a scapegoat.
The 24-year old German completed a dramatic £42.4 million move to Arsenal on deadline day which shocked the football world, including several of his old team-mates at the Bernabeu.
The fans were equally as shocked and urged the club not to sell the German during Gareth Bale’s unveiling, however their efforts proved useless as the move was announced later that day.
Plenty of questions have been asked over Özil’s transfer with the majority pointed at Real Madrid over their reasons for selling him. Reports emerged from Spain that Özil had become unprofessional from an addiction to girls and the Madrid nightlife.
Özil was quick to defend his son and dismissed the rumours.
“If Mesut is such a poor professional would he have been at Madrid for so long. I also wonder why he was always in the team under Mourinho?”
He raised a valid point with the former Madrid coach, now at Chelsea, declaring Arsenal as title contenders following their purchase of the German and if he was what Spanish media are trying to portray him as, Mourinho would know and he wouldn’t be worried.
His comments are further backed up by the reactions of his former club colleagues with bot Sergio Ramos and Alvaro Arbeloa expressing their shock and disappointment in the German’s departure and Cristiano Ronaldo conveying anger on hearing the news. This would not have been the reaction if an unprofessional player was leaving the club, no matter his talent.
There is still major confusion over why Madrid sold Özil and Perez has little answer and so has tried to but the blame on the German, which is the view of Mustafa.
“They want to make a scapegoat out of him now that he’s left the club.”
