With the transfer window only a week away from slamming shut, Arsenal are still sweating on the deal for a new signing.
The Gunners are still in the hunt for a central defensive signing, following long-term injuries to Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker which has left them short of bodies at the back. The makeshift pairing of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers were exposed in Arsenal’s first game against Liverpool as the Reds won 4-3. However, experienced centre-back Laurent Koscielny returned to action against Leicester for the first time this season and helped the Gunners secure a point against the reigning champions.
Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi is Arsenal’s number target for central defence after the North Londoners’ failed attempts to bring in other targets.
Reports, last week, claimed Mustafi’s move to Arsenal was in doubt after his medical was cancelled following a breakdown in negotiations between the Gunners and Valencia.
Now, the deal looks imminent as what is only left is for both clubs to find an agreement on the transfer fee. Marc Behrenbeck, a Germany-based football journalist says Arsenal have reached a settlement on personal terms with Mustafi, but Valencia are still seeking more money.
Behrenbeck [@Sky_Marc] tweeted: “Player wanna join @Arsenal. @valenciacf tries to maximise fee. @MustafiOfficial waits to sign contract. Still no decision. Talks 2day!”
