Is this a clue that Arsene Wenger will not bring in a new goal poacher before the end of the transfer window? It is worth noting that the Frenchman only promised the Arsenal faithful a defender. Maybe. Maybe not.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Alexis Sanchez can metamorphosed into top notch strikers like Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez, if used regularly in that position.
The absence of Olivier Giroud – who was unfit – for the game against Liverpool saw Wenger field Sanchez in the striker position, as Arsenal lost 4-3 to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Arsenal have failed to bring in a new striker so far this summer and although Giroud could be back for the game against Leicester later today, Wenger thinks Sanchez could somewhat be a long-term solution to a perturbing department for Arsenal.
“I think it is worth to try as he has the quality to go behind”, Wenger said of Sanchez.
“On the flanks he uses a lot of energy by chasing back and I would like to use his energy sometimes a bit more efficiently by going behind the defenders as he is a good finisher. He has played centre-forward at Barcelona.”
Sanchez’s energetic style of play is reminiscent of that of Manchester City’s Aguero and Barcelona’s finisher Suarez and, Wenger maintains the Chilean attacker has the skills to become a potent goalscorer.
“He has similar qualities. And he has a good timing to run behind the defenders”, Wenger continued about the ex-Barcelona player, who has often been deployed as a winger at Arsenal.
“Let’s see. It is interesting to see how well he copes with that”, he added.
Sanchez scored 17 goals in all competition last season.
