With Christiano Ronaldo seemingly set for the Real Madrid exit doors this summer, it appears Jorge Mendes is having a quiet work with every affluent club on the planet. Arsenal are reportedly the latest club he has spoken to, but is this a complete waste of time from the super-agent?

Signing Christiano Ronaldo, even at 33 years old, would be huge for Arsenal, and would mark a major statement of short term ambition, as they aim to return to the pinnacle of the game. Despite his age, Ronaldo’s fitness and mentality make him a threat the minute he steps onto the pitch and his will to win lifts the players around him every week, something Arsenal lack.

Ronaldo’s impact on games has also changed over the last few years, which has been directly tied to his age. We no longer see the exciting, flamboyant winger that played for Manchester United, or Real Madrid in his early days; Ronaldo’s influence now comes from inside the box. He impacts games where it most matters, by scoring goals.

Over the last ten years, his numbers have been matched only by Messi, another superhuman. Even this season, an apparently poor season, he has notched over 20 goals in all competition, which only goes to highlights the incredibly high standards demanded of him. With an impact like this, Ronaldo would be a great signing for most clubs on the planet.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, signing a player at Ronaldo’s age, with Ronaldo’s transfer fee, Ronaldo’s wages and Ronaldo’s ego does not quite fit. It’s likely he would command a fee in the region of 80-90m, and wages that could be anything up to £500k per week – an outrageous figure for a club that are not currently competing in the Champions League. He currently earns £365,000 a week according to reports but will want a big increase on that for sure.
