For the first time in a long while, Arsenal have depth in their squad. Nonetheless, the onus now lies on Arsene Wenger to keep everybody happy and retain the same team for the foresable future.
In the summer of 2013, Wenger brokered the most expensive deal in the history of Arsenal. A 42million Pounds deal that saw Mesut Ozil joined us from Real Madrid on a five-year contract and subsequently signed Alexis Sanchez on a four year deal the following season.
Both players are in the final two years of their contract and are currently the highest earners at Arsenal. Latest report claims Arenal are on the verge of offering both players an improved contract and they will now earn a combined £340k-per-week to keep them at the Emirates until atleast 2021.
However, Wenger confirmed that talks for contract extension will begin soon as he looks to secure Ozil and Sanchez.
“Ozil and Sanchez, yes we are going to start contract negotiations with them.”
Wenger had revealed at the end of last season that they opened talks with Ozil but talks were stalled when the player left for the European Championship. However, Ozil and Sanchez are now due to open talks with Arsenal and Wenger is very positive that an agreement will be reached.
The aforementioned players have an understanding on the pitch and are currently the biggest stars we have. Retaining them for the foreseable future is a welcome idea that we cannot gamble on.
Arsenal managed a scrapping draw in the Champions League on Tuesday but will be looking to get the maximum three points in the Premier against Hull City.
