Arsenal are on the verge of sealing a free transfer move for Juventus right back Stephan Lichtsteiner after he visited the London Colney training ground, according to the Metro.
The veteran right back is approaching the end of his contract with Juve at the end of the season and will be eligible to join another club for free after seven successful years with the Old Lady.
The Gunners need a backup for Hector Bellerin who has been without cover since Mathieu Debuchy left in January, and they believe the 34-year-old Swiss defender will provide not only good cover, but an experienced head in the squad.
They are now believed to have agreed a deal in principle with him after his visit to their training ground, and it’ll be finalized before the World Cup.
Lichtsteiner has received very lucrative offers from the Middle East and China but insists that money will not be the motivation for his next move.
“I don’t chase money and I need a place where I’ll have a good quality of life,” said Lichtsteiner.
“My wife and children have to be happy and that wouldn’t be the case in China. I don’t need more money.”
Unai Emery is set to be handed a meagre budget of £50 million for transfers with a squad to rebuild, he will be pleased to get a vital position covered without touching the budget.
