Arsène Wenger wants to sign goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.
Don Balon claim that Arsenal are after the 25-year-old German goalkeeper, as concerns about Petr Čech’s abilities continue to mount (via Express). The Czech international is undoubtedly one of the greatest goalkeepers of the Premier League era, but he’s also 35 years old, and will be 36 by next summer.
Fans are particularly unimpressed with the goalkeeper’s last couple of games against Everton and Swansea, where he conceded one goal through an ill-judged turn trying to take on Oumar Niasse in his own box, and another by failing to come off his line until far too late against the Swans.
However, if Arsenal really are interested in ter Stegen, then they aren’t short on ambition.
The German is Barcelona’s number one goalkeeper, and has started 15 of their last 16 games, only missing a Copa Del Rey match against Real Murcia.
He’s also kept nine clean sheets in that time.
Although the outfield players should take some credit for that as well, the goalkeeper can’t be doing too badly.
He played just as often last season, appearing 46 times in total, so this campaign isn’t a one-off either.
Why he’d want to leave Barcelona as he enters his peak years is a bit beyond me, but I suppose it’s worth a try.
