ARSENE WENGER has revealed his biggest transfer regret was not signing Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese superstar has revealed in the past that he came “within an inch” of joining the Gunners in 2003.
During his time at Old Trafford, Ronaldo won eight trophies in six years before moving to Real Madrid for a then-world record fee.
And since that move, he has established himself as arguably the best player in the world.
Wenger has insisted had he joined Arsenal instead, the fortunes of the north London club would have been very different.
When asked in a Q&A with Arsenal fans to name the one player he wished he had signed for Arsenal, Wenger replied: “I nearly signed Ronaldo and I think that would have changed the history of Arsenal Football Club.
“The Ronaldo story was very, very close.”
The legendary manager will leave the Emirates outfit at the end of the year, and also made a wild claim about Lionel Messi.
Again in 2003, after Cesc Fabregas joined from Barca’s La Masia academy, the Frenchman asked for Messi and Gerard Pique too.
“Messi as well, because we were interested in him,” said Wenger.
“When Fabregas came here we asked Messi and Pique to join as well, that didn’t work.”
