ARSENAL have contacted Real Madrid to enquire about signing James Rodriguez, according to reports.
But the Spanish giants would prefer to sell to Tottenham because they believe they could get Christian Eriksen in exchange.
The Independent claim Arsenal are keen to take him on loan for the rest of the season before making the deal permanent in the summer.
A deal of this nature could be complicated because he is currently 18 months in to a two-year loan at Bayern Munich.
Eriksen is understood to be one of Real’s top transfer targets and it was previously claimed they were willing to break their transfer record to get him.
Being a similar player to Eriksen, if Rodriguez did move to Spurs it could help smooth a deal for Eriksen to go in the opposite direction.
The Colombian arrived at the Bernabeu as one of Europe’s hottest properties in the summer of 2014.
He had just won the Golden Boot at the World Cup in Brazil and was named in the La Liga team of the year during his first season.
However, poor form saw him fall down the pecking order and he was eventually sent to Bayern on loan at the start of last season.
They agreed to pay an £11.5m loan fee – which is being paid in instalments – and can sign him permanently for a further £39.5m at the end of the current campaign.
However, the 27-year-old is now out of favour in Germany and has started only nine Bundesliga matches under manager Niko Kovac in 2018-19.
