Arsenal have made an offer to sign Atletico Madrid Gelson Martins this month, according to reports. Unai Emery is desperate for reinforcements this month and Arsenal have been locked in talks with Barcelona about Denis Suarez. Arsenal can only sign players on loan in the January transfer window due to financial restrictions, and the club have made enquiries about several players, but have so far failed to come to terms with Barcelona and Suarez.
Portuguese Newspaper O Jogo now claim Arsenal have made a firm offer for Martins, who could leave Spain this month. Atletico are trying to sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea and may need to offload a forward to make room for the striker in the squad. Martins arrived at Atletico last summer, but has failed to nail down a regular starting place.
The 23-year-old, previously been linked with Liverpool, has managed just 12 appearances in all competitions this season, starting only one game in La Liga. Atletico are pushing to challenge Barcelona for the La Liga title in the second half of the season. The Spanish side trial Barcelona by five points, and are hopeful extra firepower from Morata can spark a run at the Catalan giants.
Arsenal have just over a week to complete any signings, with the transfer window scheduled to shut on 31 January. Martins would be a good option for Arsenal being a versatile right winger, who can also play on the left or upfront. The Gunners may need to bring in defensive cover amid fears right-back Hector Bellerin could miss the rest of the season to injury.
