Arsenal sent scouts to watch 17-year-old Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kokcu on Sunday, as the teenager scored and assisted on his Eredivisie debut.
The Daily Mail write that Arsenal were in attendance on Sunday as Kokcu made his first senior league appearance, playing against FC Emmen. In just 45 minutes on the pitch, Kokcu scored one and assisted one, as his team finished 4-1 winners.
Kokcu had made one appearance before last weekend, playing in a Dutch domestic cup match back in September. He scored on that debut as well, against VV Gemert. Here are the highlights from his latest appearance:
As a result of his senior call-ups, Kokcu has been in and out of the u21 and u19 Feyenoord teams this season, but he’s still managed five goals and four assists in 11 appearances at those levels. He’s also scored three and assisted two in seven games for the Netherlands u19s.
It’s no surprise that Arsenal aren’t the only team watching him. Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven were also at the match on Sunday, and Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham and PSG have all watched the midfielder in the past.
Perhaps Arsenal could offer a clearer route to senior football than any of the alternatives though.
Less than two weeks ago, Unai Emery gave a debut to 17-year-old Bukayo Saka, along with 18-year-old Zech Medley and 19-year-old Charlie Gilmour. Emile Smith Rowe (18), Eddie Nketiah (19), Matteo Guendouzi (19) and Joe Willock (19) also started the match. The opportunities are there if you’re good enough.
