Joao Felix has signed a contract extension to stay with current club Benfica, despite transfer links to Arsenal earlier this year.
According to reports in March, Arsenal sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old play on a number of occasions.
There was clearly interest there, which would have only increased as Felix started this campaign with two goals and an assist in just 152 league minutes. He also has four goals in eight games for the Portugal u21s, scoring in both of the international breaks this season.
Unfortunately, Benfica are well aware of the risk of losing their star youth midfielder, so they’ve given him a new five-year contract to 2023. Felix’s release clause was already ridiculously high, at €60m, but they’ve reportedly now increased that to €120m, a Portuguese record.
Arsenal were never the only club following Felix. Various reports from Portugal and England suggested Manchester City, AS Monaco, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea and West Ham United were all interested.
Perhaps he really did draw that much attention, or maybe the media were just throwing names at the wall to see which ones would stick. Either way, it doesn’t look like the Portuguese youngster is likely to be on the move any time soon.
