Despite everyone focusing on Arsenal’s well documented striker problem, no one seems to be discussing the fact that Arsenal could do with a centre back signing this summer. When you consider the fact that Per Mertesacker will be 32 in September and the fact that Chambers may be going on loan to a yet to be decided Premier league club, you will find out that Arsenal only have three experienced centre backs to call up on.
Of that three, only one is reliable unfortunately. With Mertesacker clocking 32 in two months time, he is certainly going to become slower which means he can’t be relied upon for a full season and considering he has not been offered a new contract, from all indication, the German is in his last year at Arsenal.
This is why the skysports reports today claiming Arsenal have had a bid accepted by Dortmund for the services of Neven Subotic is quite interesting. The Serbian is surplus to requirement at Dortmund and reports in both the German and the British media have it that Dortmund have given him the permission to talk to any club as he will be allowed to leave Dortmund this summer for the right price.
Dortmund are said to be demanding just about 12 million for his services. Although Middlesborough and AS Monaco have both been linked with the signing of the player, it is believed that Arsenal have won the race for his signature and that he will undergo a medical with the Gunners tomorrow.
Hopefully this report is not one of the many lies at this period in the football calendar.
