Max Meyer emerged as a late January target for Arsenal, but reports in Germany have stated that Beyern Munich have joined the running for the talented midfielder. The Bavarian giants are keen to add him to their squad following the signing of his Shalke teammate Leon Goretzka, who penned a pre contract agreement last month.
Bayern’s interest comes as a bit of a surprise considering the strength of their midfield, however logical considering their obsession with adding every talented German player, regardless of game time. From Meyer’s perspective, he must think carefully about this as he is at a pivotal point of his development, and a few seasons of sitting on the bench could undo the good work he’s done over the last two seasons.
This season, he has made the deep lying role his own, making the most of his engine and delivering stand out performances week in, week out. It’s meant his game has changed, which is a big reason behind the fact he hasn’t scored this season. At Bayern he would be competing with Tolisso and Vidal for a spot in this area, and both players are at a higher level than him right now.
Rated at just £14.4m, Max will be a bargain purchase for Arsenal if they could pull it off. If he was to move to Arsenal, he would find himself playing alongside Aaron Ramsey, a man who tirelessly makes runs from one box to another. The ground covered by both would make them difficult to defend against, and increase Arsenal’s energy instantly. But, it would also fail to address Arsenal’s holding midfield problem.
