If not for Leicester City’s success in the league, West Ham and Dimitri Payet would have made lot of headlines last season. It must be said that Payet had a quite remarkable impact for the Hammers, which has made everyone watching the Euro’s believe he has to move to a bigger club next season.
Not even his manager believed Payet, who joined the Hammers from French ligue one side Marseille would have make such a big influence on West ham’s league fortunes. Kudos to Wetham manager Slaven Bilic, who has believed in Payet’s talent. Credit has to be given to the player himself who made good use of the opportunity quite well.
On his debut English Premier League season,Payet was shortlisted by the Premier League for the 2016 PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award. Also In May 2016, Payet became the 38th recipient of the West Ham United Player of the Year award.
Payet is dynamic dribbler with an eye for good passes, and has good shooting ability. He’s ability to score long-range free-kicks as if they were penalty kicks makes him a match winner. It’s no surprise that his form has earned him a recall to the French National team. He’s thunderous late shot earned France a win in the Opening European championship match against romania.
Speaking to SkySports about Payet, Arsenal Manager Arsenen Wenger was quoted saying:
“He was a top talent, always, but had periods of being up and down. I’ve looked at him many times. I’ve known him for a long time. He played at Saint-Etienne and we watched him many times.
“I think he has all the attributes to be a top player, which he is, but he’s 29 years old already. He’s matured a lot and come back into the national team, which shows he was more consistent.”
Arsene Wenger is well known for his good scouting ability of young sters in the French league.
What is yet to be known is if Wenger will table a bid for this exerience midfielder, now that the trio of Arteta, Rosicky and Flamini have all left the team.
Wenger would be left with the question, “would Payet improve my current squad right away?”. The answer, definitely, is yes.
