Arsene Wenger is to hold talks with Granit Xhaka over the Arsenal midfielder’s ill-discipline, according to reports.
The summer signing was shown his second red card of the season on Sunday when a wild lunge during the 2-1 victory over Burnley led to a straight sending off. The incident turned the game and Arsenal were eventually fortunate to claim all three points, needing a 98th minute penalty from Alexis Sanchez to win the game.
Xhaka, who had a reputation for poor discipline before signing for the Gunners, was also sent off for two bookable offences against Swansea back in October.
The latest sending off will see Xhaka suspended for at least Arsenal’s next four games.
According to various reports, Wenger was furious over the incident and will warn Xhaka about his future behaviour and the responsibility he has to his team-mates.
Speaking after the match, Wenger made his views clear.
‘He has to control his game, and not punish the team with his lack of control and his tackling,’ said the Arsenal manager.
‘We don’t encourage our midfielders to go down in tackles, we want them to stand up and not make these kind of fouls.’
Xhaka is due to miss the FA Cup tie with Southampton this weekend and then the Premier League meetings with Watford, Chelsea and Hull.
