Arsene Wenger says he wants Danny Welbeck to remain with Arsenal, amid rumours linking the English international with a move away in the January transfer window.
As with most of Arsenal’s attacking players, plenty of media publications are speculating that Welbeck might leave. Alexis Sanchez has already left, Olivier Giroud could follow him, and if you believe the rumours, the Englishman is next.
Wenger isn’t keen on losing the striker though. The manager told reporters in his pre-Chelsea press conference: “I want Danny Welbeck to stay here.”
Unfortunately, you can see why the 27-year-old’s future is up for debate. Since joining from Manchester United, the striker has struggled with multiple injuries. In all, he’s spent approximately 574 days on the sidelines since the start of 2014/15.
Arsenal haven’t rely been able to rely on Welbeck on the pitch either. This season, he’s up to 22 appearances but has just five goals. As one of the team’s main attacking threats, the Gunners need a lot more from him.
Plus, the former United man’s contract only lasts until 2019. By this point in the Alexis/Özil saga we’d already had six months of speculation, so it’s no surprise Welbeck is getting the same treatment now.
Luckily for the striker, Wenger still seems to have faith in him. There’s no need for a move away to Besiktas just yet.
